Just like medical compression stockings, support stockings can help to counteract venous symptoms in combating venous problems such as edema.  The key difference, however, is the amount of compression applied to the limbs in order to encourage healthy blood flow through the veins.  This is indicated by defined compression levels.  Support stockings have a compression level of below 15mmHg and can help counteract symptoms like minor swelling or tired legs, whereas medical compression garments have higher compression levels and are for treating existing venous conditions
